The Malnutrition Crisis in Nunavut
Malnutrition is precipitated with diets of insufficient nutrients. Health problems of malnourishment remain a struggle for many Canadians living in isolated Northern communities, particularly in Nunavut (Government of Canada, 2017). First, the rising climate based on the geographic location of Nunavut evoked inactive hunting and a limited food system. In addition, the harsh weather conditions in Nunavut reinforces the difficulty in cultivating crops. Secondly, there are insufficient resources for perishable foods for the residents. Also, the Doughnut Economics Principle emphasizes the impacts of the changing climate on the environment and the food system. Lastly, the lack of government aid is evident as food prices are still high even after the subsidies. Moreover, the information provided to citizens in Nunavut by Nutrition North Canada was unclear and caused individuals to misunderstand the goal of the program. These issues can be directly linked to the malnutrition situation in Nunavut. Hopefully, malnutrition in Nunavut can be resolved by enhancing government subsidies through the reduction of prices of fresh foods, transporting GMOs from other countries, stabilizing the environmental and social complications, and advancing farm technologies. Although malnutrition is still an ongoing issue in Nunavut, if a continued effort is made to address the issue then it can be overcome.
