Evaluating the effects that social media and influencers have on food choices
In order to reach bigger populations, publicity has changed their way of delivery from advertisements in the television and newspapers to the use of social media influencers and Youtube. The present study investigates whether social media influencers affect daily food choices and overall health in children and young adults. This paper reviews the results from existing studies and includes current effects that social media influencers (Instagram, Tiktok, Youtube) have on viewers. Results show that social media influencers have mostly negative impacts on the food choice of spectators, however there are also some positive effects. Positive impacts include the encouragement that viewers receive to try more healthy recipes and core foods. Negative impacts include the social media advertisement on sugary drinks and high fat foods (non core). In addition, the influence of social media on food choices can affect the overall health of the viewer. The effect can either be on both extremes such as malnutrition and obesity, or it can also be a balance, which is just a healthy diet. Given the increasing popularity and influence that social media influencers have on spectators, more research is needed to better understand the problem and find solutions.
